CASE STUDY
Broadgate Winter Forest 2018
Idea
Central London’s Broadgate is a bustling pedestrianised district in the City with over 65 millions visitors annually. Katah Events were asked to create part of their magical Broadgate Circle Winter Forest in 2017.
The setup was to be in Exchange Square, directly next to Liverpool Street station, and lasted for eleven weeks.
Challenges
Creating a warm and inviting outdoor space in the depths of the British winter
A narrow window for construction of just two days
Designing and building in the unique location of Exchange Square, including working around its central water feature
Ensuring the health and safety of the public and staff in a dynamic and busy area during inclement weather
Tailored approach
Precise layouts were created to allow coordination with expert scaffold designers
Comprehensive wind loading calculations and stress taking were undertaken with specialist technical measures put in place, including a unique water ballast design, custom tipi stakes and bespoke metalwork
Set up was quick and efficient and included 24-hour construction to meet the tight deadlines
Regular safety check and installation of a fixed weather station to enable close monitoring at all times
Installation of electric heat blowers and thick oak doors for warmth
Delivery
Bar and restaurant created in two adjoined tipis for the Winter Forest Bar & Grill and the Hideaway
The Tipi Cinema built with an oak door entrance for festive film-watching
Smooth running of the event over the eleven-weeks duration with close monitoring and checks
